“Interwoven,” an Artwork Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Taiwan Marine Education Center

Project Assistant:LIN,MEI-CHUN

The Taiwan Marine Education Center was established in September 2013 and is now entering its 10th year of operation. The core missions of the center are to promote marine education, encourage public engagement in outdoor marine activities, and integrate marine knowledge into education. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the center, the members of the center collaborated in a relay-style effort to gather waste from marine waste bases and non-garbage dumps to create an artwork called “Interwoven.” The artwork, which measured 91 cm in height and 183 cm in width, comprised 1,419 bottle caps, 25 fishing net floats, and approximately 300 g of plastic waste. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the center, the artwork embodied the concept of environmental protection, with the aim of drawing people’s attention to environmental issues and inspiring them to take action with respect to plastic reduction and resource use.

Since 2013, the Taiwan Marine Education Center has been committed to marine education. Over the years, it has gradually expanded the scope of its marine education to include outdoor marine education. In the artwork “Interwoven,” marine elements such as dugout canoes and ocean waves are depicted in the upper left to lower right, whereas outdoor elements such as fields and mountains appear from the upper right to lower left. Human and animal footprints were also incorporated to symbolize the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. Finally, the seagull statue of National Taiwan Ocean University and the logo of the Taiwan Marine Education Center were embedded to indicate the center’s commitment to co-prospering with the environment through outdoor marine education in the past 10 years.

“Interwoven” is a result of the joint efforts of members of the Taiwan Marine Education Center as well as the officers, lecturers, and partners who have supported its growth in the pursuit of sustainable environmental development. In alignment with the concept that “A person may walk fast, but a group of people will walk further,” the center wishes to thank everyone for contributing to its progress.
