Summary of the 2020 Marine Science Education Seminar Series

Since 2016, the Taiwan Marine Education Center has been actively promoting ocean-related scientific knowledge. The promotion has taken the form of developing marine scientific knowledge packages, compiling marine literacy books, inviting experts to write and publish articles on marine science in newspapers and magazines, and creating marine disaster-prevention educational animations. In 2020, our center visited schools for the first time and held seminars to communicate the importance of marine scientific knowledge with students in elementary school, junior high school, and senior and vocational high schools.

The content of the “Marine Science Education Series Seminars” was developed based on the five main learning themes stipulated in the Marine Education Issues section of the “Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education in National Primary and Secondary Schools and General Senior High School—Integrating Issues Course Handbook, complemented with the contents of the publication materials developed by our center over the years. The seminars centered on four themes, namely “Marine Disaster Prevention and Water Safety,” “Marine Culture and Society,” “Marine Science and Technology,” and “Marine Resources and Sustainability.” Experts with a relevant academic background and experience in extension education were invited to serve as speakers at the seminars. From May 6, 2020, to November 25, 2020, a total of 36 seminars were held, which were participated by a total of 5,322 participants.
