2020 level 2( Blue )marine educator training course

The first marine educator training course in 2020 was jointly hosted by the Taiwan Marine Education Center (TMEC) and the Senior High School Marine Educational Resource Center (in New Taipei Municipal Hsin Tien Senior High School). This course was divided into two levels called Level Blue and Level 2. It was also divided into three stages for training instructors at the intermediate and advanced levels. This was the first time that this course was taught in different stages. Resources from the two major marine science museums in Northern and Southern Taiwan were integrated, and public social education venues were provided for instructors to participate in the course and gain new knowledge.

The first-stage course was hosted on January 12 and 13 in the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology. The participating instructors became marine technology inventors, where they assembled remote control sailboats. This activity helped them grasp scientific concepts underpinning hull structure, buoyancy, and navigation principles. The instructors also participated in an experiential fishery activity Honor of Fishermen, through which they gained an understanding of problems concerning the lack of fish resources.

The second-stage course was hosted on February 22 and 23 in the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology. The event was originally slated to last 3 days. However, because school schedules in Taiwan were adjusted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, activities on the final day were cancelled to avoid affecting the learning opportunities of the participating instructors. During the course, the instructors first visited Donggang Township to understand its fishery culture and folk practice of ocean worship. Subsequently, they attempted to identify unique marine species from rough fish piles and create specimens. Subsequently, they visited museums to explore the design of educational exhibitions, sea turtle preservation programs, coral reef restoration programs, and research on microplastics in the ocean.

The third-stage course was hosted on March 15 in the T Space of the ASK Education Team. The course activity focused on the discussion of concept-oriented strategies for exploring different topics, and it introduced pedagogical methods, such as four corner debates, spectral narration, and the Frayer Model. To host this course, the TMEC convened three course preparation meetings with the ASK Education Team and Senior High School Marine Educational Resource Center. The goal was to optimize training quality.

Instructors who participated in the 2020 course had to meet once every month to familiarize themselves with each other. In response to the increasing severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, all personnel and participants complies with the relevant pandemic prevention measures of regularly measuring their body temperature, donning a surgical mask, and sanitizing their hands.

Two cohorts for the marine instructor training course at Level Blue and Level 2 are planned for this year. The next cohort will begin during the summer vacation. This center continues to collaborate with marine education resources centers in different cities and counties to prepare for the course. Those who intend to participate in this course may refer to the official website for the latest information.
