2022 Marine Specialist Talent Cultivation Forum

    On August 17, 2022, the Taiwan Marine Education Center hosted a 2022 Marine Specialist Talent Cultivation Forum, which focused on the current state of and visions for marine education and the promotion and implementation of practical marine education. Three years have passed since the implementation of the 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum Guidelines in 2019. Through this forum, we hope to encourage thinking regarding the current state of marine education in Taiwan, examine the introduction of marine education in schools, and identify directions for integrating marine education with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    In Thematic Forum 1: Current State of and Visions for Marine Education, Prof. Chin-Kuo Wu (National Taiwan Ocean University Teacher Education Center), Prof. Lee-Shing Fang (Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources, National Sun Yat-sen University), Mr. Tsung-Shun Huang (President of the Taiwan Association for Marine Environmental Education), and Prof. Shin-Jia He (Center for General Education, National Taichung University of Science and Technology) engaged in extensive discussions with Prof. Tsung-Yuan Hsiao (Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Taiwan Ocean University) serving as the host. In Thematic Forum 2: Promotion and Practice of Marine Education, Ms. Hsin-Hui Chiu (teacher, Tainan Municipal Simen Experimental Elementary School), Mr. Wei-Ching Wu (teacher, Taitung County Changbin Junior High School), Mr. Shao-Wen Kan (principal, Keelung Municipal Nuan Nuan Senior High School), and Ms. Su-Fen Chen (director, National Museum of Marine Science & Technology)engaged in discussions with Prof. Chin-Kuo Wu (National Taiwan Ocean University Teacher Education Center), who was serving as the host.

    The forum was had 151 participants online. Through an exploration of diverse perspectives, this forum enabled experts, researchers, and specialists in the field of marine education to examine the current state and promotion of marine education in Taiwan and to identify directions for integrating marine education with SDGs. During the forum, winners of the 2021 Marine Education Contribution Awards and the 2021 Marine Education Innovative Teaching Teamwork Award also had the opportunity to share their firsthand experiences in marine education and provide practical suggestions, thereby providing the forum’s participants with new insights into marine education.
