National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) Taiwan Marine Education Center, commissioned by the Ocean Affairs Council under the 2025 Ocean Literacy Education Promotion Plan, held the Ocean Literacy Innovative Teaching Competition Finals and Community Achievements Showcase on October 29 at the World Trade Center Taichung. Building on the outcomes of two rounds of seed teacher training in May and August, the competition focused on promoting the Ocean-Sciences Sequence (OSS) curriculum, attracting 54 teams from across Taiwan. A total of 30 teams advanced to the finals. Before an audience of 325 education partners, these teams showcased innovative teaching approaches that transformed local materials and demonstrated substantial achievements in promoting ocean literacy education.
After a rigorous evaluation process, three teams were awarded top honors for their exceptional innovation: For the Elementary School Division, National Nanke International Experimental High School (elementary school department) claimed the championship by using digital tools to identify plankton, thereby strengthening students’ observation and classification skills. For the Junior High School Division, Taichung Municipal Da-Dau Junior High School won by integrating AI technology to support lessons on Earth’s evolutionary history. For the Senior and Vocational High School Division, National Chutung Senior High School prevailed by employing a carbon cycle simulation experiment to concretize abstract environmental issues and enhance students’ inquiry skills.
The event also convened teacher communities from 22 counties and cities to share practical experiences in implementing OSS in school, fostering cross-regional exchange. The awards ceremony was jointly presented by NTOU Vice President Li Ming-an and Ocean Affairs Council Director Lin Li-ying, reflecting the hope that interagency collaboration will continue to deepen ocean literacy education in Taiwan. Director Wu Chin-kuo of the Taiwan Marine Education Center emphasized that the center will continue to serve as a vital bridge between policy and classroom practice, supporting teachers and communities in developing diverse ocean education initiatives.
