The TMEC serves as a key institution in promoting marine education in Taiwan. In addition to advancing ocean literacy among elementary, junior high, and senior high schools in Taiwan, the TMEC has consistently demonstrated strong commitment to international engagement. Beyond translating major United Nations documents on marine education, the TMEC has established academic exchanges with prominent global organizations including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. National Marine Educators Association. The TMEC has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Wakasa Senior High School in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, in 2022 and maintains active communication with scholars from the Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Japan.
Given TMEC’s growing influence as a pivotal marine education institution in Asia, a delegation from the Korea Maritime Institute and National Marine Education Center in South Korea visited NTOU on May 14, 2025. The visiting delegation consisted of four representatives from South Korea and one interpreter. The primary goal of the visit was to study Taiwan’s marine education policies and operational systems as a reference model. The discussions also focused on feasible approaches for strengthening South Korea’s currently limited international collaboration in marine education, exploring potential pathways for trilateral cooperation among South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. Led by Director Chin-Kuo Wu, the TMEC organized a courtesy visit to the university president’s office, accompanied by faculty and administrators from relevant university departments. This meeting served to provide international partners access to Taiwan’s academic resources. During the exchange, both sides presented detailed briefings and explored potential avenues for future collaboration. Director Sung-Ho Kim of the National Marine Education Center extended a warm invitation to the TMEC to visit South Korea, with the aim of deepening mutual relations and jointly promoting international cooperation and development in marine education.
