Launch of the Nationwide Marine Education Touring Exhibition and a Science Picture Book Contest

Project Assistant:LIN,MEI-CHUN

The Nationwide Marine Education Touring Exhibition has officially set sail, bringing displays to multiple locations across Taiwan. Centered on the promotion of marine culture and environmental education, the exhibition features a diverse range of content including marine-themed poetry, science picture books, and stories of educators who have championed marine awareness. The exhibition invites the public to explore the multifaceted nature of the ocean in an engaging and educational manner. Moreover, the Third Marine Science Picture Book Contest has been launched. Teachers and students across the country are encouraged to collaborate in crafting picture books that convey scientific marine knowledge to broader audiences.

To align with the international observance of the World Oceans Day on June 8 each year, the Ministry of Education of Taiwan has designated the corresponding week as “Marine Education Week” since 2015. The TMEC at NTOU has been entrusted with the implementation of related programs. Among these programs, the picture book contest is a key initiative. This year’s theme, namely “Sustainable Oceans,” encourages participants to blend science, art, and literature in their storytelling, demonstrating how marine science relates to everyday life. The initiative seeks to inspire creativity among teachers and students at all educational levels, making marine knowledge more accessible through the picture book format. By doing so, it aims to deepen marine awareness, enhance ocean literacy, and promote active participation in marine conservation. Selected entries will be featured in the touring exhibition, and outstanding works may be digitized for dissemination to a broader readership (submission guidelines can be viewed at https://tmec.ntou.edu.tw/p/404-1016-111539.php?Lang=zh-tw).

The 2025 Nationwide Marine Education Touring Exhibition is organized around three main themes: the (1) Marine Poetry and Science Picture Book Zone, (2) Marine Education Advocates Zone, and (3) Marine Science Zone. The Marine Poetry and Science Picture Book Zone showcases outstanding poetry and picture books developed under the Ministry of Education’s “Marine Education Week” initiative. Through vivid illustrations and expressive text, the displays explore topics such as marine ecology, environmental change, and conservation awareness. The Marine Education Advocates Zone highlights the stories of educators, experts, and organizations dedicated to advancing marine education. By sharing their efforts and impact, it seeks to inspire broader recognition and engagement. Finally, the Marine Science Zone features interactive educational exhibits developed by the TMEC. Designed for accessibility, these exhibits help the public gain a deeper understanding of ocean-related concepts in a clear and approachable manner.

The touring exhibition is being held at the following venues: Lieyu Township Public Library, Kinmen County; Daren Township Library, Taitung County; Cijin Branch, Kaohsiung Public Library; Changhua City Library, Changhua County; Nan-Liao Branch, Library of Cultural Affairs Bureau, Hsinchu City; and Nangushan Branch, Kaohsiung Public Library. Members of the public are warmly invited to visit the exhibitions and engage with the diverse educational content (exhibition details are provided at https://tmec.ntou.edu.tw/p/412-1016-12927.php?Lang=zh-tw).

This touring exhibition and picture book contest aim to integrate marine education into everyday life and inspire public concern and proactive involvement in ocean-related issues. Details of the picture book competition have been released. Students and educators with creativity and passion for the ocean are sincerely encouraged to participate and contribute to the advancement of marine education.
